Wiring Spot light to OEM Switch

Hi guys,

I want to wire up some spot light on the Liberty i'm building but i'd like to use the Outback Fog light Switch so it looks factory.

Now I don't understand this stupid switch. Its got 5wires
Blue W grey dots
Black W grey dots
Yellow W Blue line
2x White W Yellow line
White W grey dots

The plan is to wire the spot light to the high beam using the diagram below.

I want to wire this OEM switch at 86 and have its little pilot light light up too but how can i tell whats what with those 5 wires???

Grab yourself a WSM with wiring diagram in it to see the fog light switch.

As for wiring the spot lights on later models, use this method...

It a 98 Outback AUS the first outback.

So you want the spotlights to come on with the hibeam, but also want to be able to turn them off with the fog light? Or you want to be able to turn them on and off with the fog light, but dont want them on during lowbeam?

If you want them to come on during hibeam and be able to turn them off it should be easy. Just make sure that the current hibeam relay can cope with the extra current of the spotties. Id run a new relay anyway to isolate the circuits. Then all you need to do is break the exite line for the new relay with the fog switch. That way there is no high current wiring in the dash.

I hate wiring and still find this easy, so you'll have no issues with it

Thats the Plan but i need to figure out what wire does what on the fog light switch and how to get it to illuminate when on..

WHy are you bothering with the switch - just use the fog light wires near the headlights and wire them to the spotties - thats what I did on my Outback.

Because it's the law that your spot lights turn off when you dip your high beams.

yeah mine do - wired them up as per spotties with a separate relay and power from high beam then just used the fog light wires as the switched wires. Too easy

Although mine do have a strange anomaly where they go off with low beam but back on with park lights but I can live with that. Someone on here explained why that happens but I didn't really pay much attention 'cos it works and I'm a lazy bugger and couldn't be bothered going back and fixing it !!

I've had a quick read of the wiring diagram and come up with this...

The plug on the Fog Light Switch should be yellow in colour with 6 pinout places. Only 5 wires are used as follows

Pin#1 - Black with White trace wire connect to Red with Yellow wire from LH Headlight
Pin#2 - Yellow wire connect to Illumination Circuit (you'll need to find one from another switch closeby, should be the same coloured wires)
Pin#3 - White wire connect to pin #86 on your Spot Light Relay
Pin#4 - White with Yellow wire connect to Illumination Circuit (again you'll need to find one from another switch closeby, should be the same coloured wires)
Pin#5 - Empty spot (no wire)
Pin#6 - Yellow wire do not use

The rest just follow as per Gannon's wiring...

Exactly my thoughts too! By far the easiest way to do it!

If you don't have a multi metre you'll need to sell a factory thermo fan or something for $20 or $30 from memory - get a digital unit. Dick Smith/JayCar/SCA etc will have them.

Use the Ohms setting, then start probing. When it goes to "1" then you've got a circuit. You might have to try the switch in both positions going through all the wires to find the right combination

And won't this switch still have the fog light symbol on it??
