Do EA81 slotted alternator brackets fit EA82s ?

Post by discopotato03 » Sat Mar 03, 2012 9:36 am

Hi all , I noticed that 89 Brumby slotted outer alternator brackets are different to EA82 ones . It looks like the difference is that it rests up against the rear of the alternator casings outer ear instead of the front like an EA82s does . I now have the Hitachi 80a alternator fitted and I think the EA81 adjustment side bracket would be simpler if it fitted .
Every time I look at Coxys Brumby I see all sorts of subtle engine differences that would make life a little easier in the real world . I won't have the Subaru time over again which is a pity because if I could I'd think seriously about having a twin carb EA81S in an early L Series like my 86 RX Turbo . So much more compact and while not as sophisticated without EFI definitely heaps simpler without the turbocharger and all that goes with them . With the effort that went into my 82T engine the 81S would not have been that far behind power wise and ultimately simpler and very likely lighter .

Back on topic does the 81 outer alternator bracket fit and work on an MPFI EA82 ?

Cheers Adrian .

What have you been smoking?
Surely you must be pushing 140+hp with your EA82T, un-intercooled. Id like to see the EA81 make that, even with cams and carbies and maybe you might see that hp at 9000rpm, but the torque wont even be close

Easy pal and no I don't smoke anything except rail grade diesel .
I don't intend to dyno my my car but I think 140 might be stretching the truth . It would have been better with aftermarket engine management properly tuned but I ran out of the will to keep throwing money at it .
It might feel zippy compared to some other Ls but close short gearing accounts for some of that . I only know what my car was like and is like because I've only ever been in one RX and one Brumby .
These days I don't boot it around everywhere like I once did because I strive for 600 out of every tank of fuel .
Where we differ Gannon is that I like the simpler things because theres less to go wrong and trap you or render your car an uneconomic write off .
I also like unique things and it would have amused me in some ways to have an 81 in an L Series . You do as you please EJing your RX , I thought about it and came to the conclusing that if I wanted an EJ I'd have bought a car fitted with one knowing that the right box brakes wheels etc bolt in .

Meanwhile back at the alternator bracket ...

I wasnt having a go at ya, just surprised at your optimism of the EA81/ pessimism of the EA82T

The EA82T with the hi rise manifold made 136hp overseas with a crappy up-pipe, VF7 turbo and restrictive exhaust.
You've increased the static compression, added a Garrett turbo and free flowed the exhaust, the only thing you have holding you back is the mechanical distributer. I thought 140 was pretty conservative.

What were you expecting with a worked EA81? I had a JDM EA71 in my leone coupled to a 3AT, and it was heaps quicker than Tom's standard L wagon, it loved to rev, but had nowhere near as much torque as my L turbo wagon

Now that I have almost finished building the RX, I realise I would have been far better off buying a WRX, or even an RS Lib, even more so now that engineering and blue slipping is apparently harder now that the rules have changed. But I'll have something unique when I'm finally done.

Sorry for whoring your post, but I just wanted to make my point

Rules have only changed as far as allowing a normal AUVIS inspector to elevate to 'engineer ' status in the eyes of RMS (old RTA) should they do appropriate courses and pass, or is there more to approving the EJ turbo in L Series than before ?

The bracket - I think you can interchange between 81 and 82 just bolt from front or back. I never marked my brackets origins, but recall L used a solid spacer about 10mm thick washer on the head under the bracket. I needed to find one of those spacers amongst my junk - no need now, just bought another L Series :D mpfi Touring wagon to junk - I'll pinch it !!

Bought it for the drive train, and nothing much more. It is a smelly , sticky, sloppy driver with blown HG (ran well as partial air cooled the other day :D )

and RSRPaul, complete with bent tailgate struts :( one may be bent, tother straight ??
