IGN module trivia EA82 & EA82T 3 plug

Post by steptoe » Thu Dec 30, 2010 10:26 am

Been comparing the normal ignition module from an EA81 which is universal fit for normal EA82, and found it is not same dimensions or mounting screw points as the 3 plug ECU EA82T dizzy with vacuum advance/retard function.
I was thinking that as an option to nil 3 plug ignition module available in future (or just plain stuck on roadside with 26 year old car) whether I could simply use the easily available std module instead, as at 16 D BTDC on LPG I get no response from knock sensor indicating zero knock from fuel or ignition settings. Was thinking straight swap in may work, but of course they were not designed to be easily interchangeable. I am sure an adapter could be made up to convert if need came. Idea was to retain advance retard function of this dizzy. Another option will be to use plain old EA82 dizzy.

About six weeks ago turbo L gave a little short hic momentarily and I have parked it since and just moved it waiting for fiddling time - that time is about now. I do miss the turbo oomph

I think the turbo module has four connections and this has something to do with the knock boxes ability to retard the timing in stages if it senses detonation .

You may need to search around ignition systems parts suppliers because the Japanese were famous for using common suppliers and components where possible .
They may just have used that module in some more common application and if lucky it could be available from an alternative local source .

Have you tried to fit the NA distributors top plate in your dizzy ? it would be handy to retain the turbo ones mechanical advance and vac mechanisms because they will be closer to what a turbo engine wants than an NA ones guts . With petrol anyway .
LPG is a different story , the focus is on price rather than performance .

A .

Correct, it has four connectors in form of male spade 4.8mm. Accidentally found that to not reconnect the knock connection to dizzy near coil car still runs but has no knock retard function - I noticed no difference in performance in the weeks that it was not connected!

The terminals are labeled D, B, T, C

C connects at coil neg
T may stand for timing control
B connects to coil pos so B for battery?
D is the phase control signal which is also the check wire that I read the volts off

I have not got around to playing with dizzy components but reckon if it came to it a blob of silicone would hold things in place :)

I would have thought closest to this car in this era would be the turbo cordia . I have spare Subie module in case anyway - spare old one same age :)
