92 L Series Auto Problem - HELP!!!!

I have an 92 L-Series 4WD 3-speed Auto.
Today the auto gave up.
I can select P and the auto locks, anything else is like being in N.
I have checked the fluid level (just above full - fluid pink and clean)
I have checked the linkages between the shifter and the trans (all seems OK - I assume this is working as I can select P).
Any suggestions on what I can do to figure out what is wrong??
cheers,
Richard

I had a similar problem in a '89 skyline, it turned out to be that the torque converter crapped itself. I cant remember how much it cost but was less than getting another gearbox.
Im not sure how it was tested but I think the mechanic had to take it out to see, I guess you could check the transmission pan for any broken metal, which could indicated weather it's gearbox or torque converter.

No grinding or noises in P R D N 1 or 2. Feels like it isn't engaging at all, just like it's always staying in N.

Hi
I have an auto that has only done 36000 km since new. It has been sitting under the bench since the late 80's early 90's when my gear box builder pulled it from an L series he bought brand new. I got it from him 12 months ago and never used it and sadly wrote off my L wagon last week. I am in Melbourne.

Thanks for the offer that is really good of you to think of it, but the insurance wrote it off and paid me out. Which was a bonus because I wanted to sell it anyway and they gave me more than I probably would have asked for it.
