hey i have a 86 L and was wondering is there any way to know what type of center is sitting in there?
the reason i ask is in 2wd it handles just as a car should, but flip it to 4wd and the rear locks up as if it is welded. if it was welded this should still affect the car at slow speeds around carparks in 2wd?

to see if its a welded diff. keep in 2wd and jack up one of the back wheels. if it spins freely then its not welded, if the other one tries to turn then it is.

on the back of the diff should be a sticker with the ratio of the diff - the gearbox should hopefully be the same ratio but could of been changed.

did you just pick up the car?

That’s because as soon as you engage the ‘4wd’ you are locking in the centre diff on the gearbox thus causing the front and rear to fight and bind up

If you have one... Most L's simply (in a very complicated way) engage the rear diff to the front with no give, pretty much like a solid bar between the two diffs... This is the fighting that BrennyV mentions.

Cheers

PS binding in 4wd is normal - only use it on surfaces with a bit of give EG gravel...
