Ok been searching around and seen a few people now running the 1.59:1 PT4WD reduction gear in there EJ boxes, just want to know if anyone has also performed this on there EA FTAWD gearbox and any pros or cons of the process.
Thanks
Brendan

I had that mod done to my white Brumby around 1994. I cannot help you with the tech though, only that it's a good thing and it works.

The EA swap is a straight bolt in job. Very easy, highly recommended!

As peejay said. So easy that i want one. The hardest bit is finding an EA FT4WD gearbox to start with...
Have fun.

You need to change the 1st motion (input) shaft and the double idler and the low range driven gear if your starting with a dual range full time L box .
If yo have a single range AWD L box then you need to find a set of dual range casings and all of the above PLUS the dual range main shaft .
The third possible combination is an AWD L box with the closer ratio N/A gear set and either ratio dual range gears .
I think to do this you need the EJ gear set , EA input shaft/gear , place all the EJ counter shaft gears on the L AWD counter shaft .
This last combination is what I should have had fitted to my converted DR Vortex box for DR+AWD+ closer ratios+taller low range . If I can find an early AWD Lib box with the closer ratios I may grab that .
Cheers A .

Which gearbox (lib) are you talking about here Adrian? And does this give you the option of changing the dif ratio and retain the lockable central diff? I'm yet to get my hands on one and pull it apart to have a good look at it to see what can and cannot be done...
Sorry for the hijack.

L series to L series internals is an easy swap over and well worth it.

Bennie that I have to find out in the 1st gen manuals .
The L/Vortex AWD front diff pinion is unique amongst Subaru gearboxes - its because these are shorter than EJ AWD ones and the diff lock is in front of the center diff (L/Vortex) where the viscous coupling is behind it (EJ) . Also the hollow outer countershaft is to suit the L/Vortex diff lock which is a sliding coupling dog clutch .
Gee has someone in Victoria who can change the pinion gear on the pinion shaft if you wanted to go to the expense - possibly Modena not sure .
Will try to give Gee a bell later this morning , cheers A .

All i know is that its a ea 3.7 awd box with the option of lo range and diff lock? didnt know there was a dual range ea awd box?

BrennyV Isn't yours a dual range? (just without the lower gearing from what i understood from this thread).

Well more confused than anything my friend.
put simply I would assume single range as I’m always in awd and I can pull the leaver up into lo? or back into awd

the dual range ea awd box is awd all the time..
you have the option of using the centre diff locker
and the option of using the low range gears
if its the single range box then you only have the option of the centre diff locker

Are IOU's accepted? Or do a Homer thing and write "dosh" on a piece of paper???
What tech stuff are you after? You mean splitting the box and swapping the lo ratio gears?
I've never done it, only all talk on this topic unfortnately.
Have fun.
