I'm just curious about this.

How would you actually go about converting AWD to RWD without compromising reliability too much?

i belive there is a spool to replace the centre diff in the ej boxes, they use them in the rs liberty drift car thats floating around somewhere, dont ask me where to get them tho, all i know is that they exist

that was at round 1 of DA at barbagallo, I saw pictures on some sites and that's kinda what sparked my interest. would it have been a must to run the 4.111 subi diff?

i'd imaging it can be done in any ration

yep diff ratio doesnt matter once your runnin RWD only. The guy your talking about has ran various ratios from all the diffs he has blown

MRT in sydnet sell hte spool but its not cheap. There was one for sale on the rs lib club do a search for MRT RWD spool

As Dane has indicated MRT sell a bolt in centre ready to go for around $500 i think check thier website out

i think mrt charge around the 900mark to perth then u have to install :P

Install is easy, can even be done without removing the gearbox from the car I beleive.

Lots of money to ultimately downgrade your gearbox though...

all i did woz remove the rear ext housing and then remove the centre diff i dismantled it and used the tig to weld up the rear out put to the diff housing and walla rear wheel drive or 4wd that garantees 50/50 distribution works good........
but dont loose the end float washer....

Depending on which car you could use a selectable 4WD box and remove the front drive shafts . Selectable fourwheel drive or no wheel drive .

Selectable 4WD with no front driveshafts. I'd like to see that.
And why would you want no wheel drive?

I think he ment the likes of a MY or L series box with no centre diff

i thought using an EA gearbox with RWD only was bad for it?

or any AWD box for that matter? would this spool alleviate the issue?

EA boxes are 4wd not AWD there is a difference... lots of people with the EA boxes have ran there car for long periods of time only in rear wheel drive... it's a comon spare part to only have just an outer CV as a spare.

If you bust a CV... just remove it... slide in the outer CV to hold the wheel on and drive it home in RWD.

i see. so in some way shape or form, an EA box would be better for RWD application, yes? or no.

HEAPS cheaper... better??... would depend on the motor i guess.

an EJ gearbox running RWD would be better. Simply because its an EJ based gearbox, later model and stronger. Not really that much better though, the gearsets are similar anyway.

But if you had the option of which one to use definitely choose the EA. It will run RWD in stock form, no mods required - just put it in 4x4 and neglect to connect and front driveshafts to it.

The EA gearboxes are worth $200 these days (if that).

EJ 4x4 Gearboxes still start at around $400ish if your lucky. Then add the $900 odd for the rear wheel drive conversion component + fitting it.

Once you revert to RWD from AWD tractive effort will be less so torque loadings in the driveline will be lower - depending on how much grip is available at those two tyres .

a cheapish soob for dorifto would be ej20g with ea g/box, no front cv's, and a welded rear diff. u could probs get all that (old subaru car too) for like under $2k. cheap for parts too

hmm, my car could almost do it. cept the motor would prolly blow quickly

I've been running my brumby rwd for about a year now with no front shafts & Bratgeebah's brake kit, although i do go easy on the gear box.(cant run the risk of breaking it, its my daily driver).
