Engine and gearbox painting - got hints/tips??

So I’m organising another EJ conversion - around the ten year anniversary of Ruby Scoo’s EJ conversion!

This one is like to look into some engine and gearbox painting for better presentation.

Anyone got any tips, tricks (that actually work long term) or hints as how to best prep and paint these items?

I’ve toyed with the idea of a watered down solution of rust buster, apply to engine and gearbox (after a decent degrease), leave for half an hour then pressure wash off.

My thoughts then are to let it dry, apply a grease and wax remover then add the paint (high temp engine spec). I’m concerned that if I don’t get rid of all of the rust buster solution, it may continue to eat the alloy components. Thoughts??

The rust buster solution is an idea after seeing how well it cleans up alloy finishes - but I don’t know what the long term consequences of this application is.

Cheers

Bennie soda blasting is a way better option it cleans the surfaces right up, then you can paint with engine paint

*googles soda blasting*

And I found this, very neat setup, might take me a while but suits me to a T.

DIY soda blasting.

*checks out gumtree for a suitable air compressor*

Thanks Toonga

You can get large bags of Baking Soda from Costco if you have one in your area.

With the cost of air compressors, I might have to look into the cost of having someone do this for me - then weigh up whether it's worth buying my own or having someone do the job professionally (the professional job is probably the way to go really).

No Costco near Bendigo, but one is now open in Epping, just near Mrs El_Freddo's grandma's place :p

Bennie it is true that a reasonable air compressor will be expensive but in the long run you will use it for way more tasks.

you just have to weigh up buying air tools over replacing batteries on electric tools or being able to do a custom paint job on a car or a gearbox or an engine ;)

Toonga, I can’t tell if you’re the angel on my shoulder or the cheeky devil!

Next conundrum, do I clean the engine up and paint before or after replacing the HG? Opinions welcomed!
