is there any way that hi-range 4wd can be run in normal driving?

is it easy to get rid of the lo-range gb? are there any side-effects?

My guess is you want to use a standard dual range 2wd/4wd box like an awd, unfortunately it can't be done.

You can however use 4wd lo or hi on any surface with less then 100% traction, dirt, gravel, wet roads etc.

It's actually quite nice to drive like that in the wet, mine handled better in the wet than the dry, do watch out for understeer though, you will have to turn a little harder and a little sooner than normal.

I liked to check for bind up every so often, ie: if you're going in a straight line and you can easily flick from 2wd to 4wd hi (shouldn't even need the clutch) than it's all good.

You could replace the dual range box with a single range one but why?

You're looking at at least half a days work (for an experienced gearbox/engine swapper) not to mention the rumaging to actually find a single range box and it will be exactly the same except no low range, it is handy to have sometimes and when you don't need it don't use it.

Unless of course your current gearox is stuffed and you can find a single range one, then go for your life :wink:

i couldnt give a rats ass about the low-range bit, but my car is 1560Kg, and i wouldnt mind puttin it on a diet. hell, if i actually go all the way with this car id probably get rid of the 4wd bits all together, but hey. i keep hearin that my wagon, i cant do much to it unless i lift it, but i was kinda gonna lower it.

depends on how far you want to go with a wagon. mine has a 97 Legacy GTB (google is your friend.) shoved under it. once I get the suspension sorted its coming down an inch or so.

as for you question - locking it in high range (assuming a PT box) will snap the centre diff on a hard surface/ the only way to achieve waht you are asking is with a FT box.

PT? FT? I don't know that much, honestly. I just want to lighten the car, so itll reduce the strain on the engine, and it seems that my dual-range setup is quite heavy, so explain to me what exactly i'd need to put a liberty 5spd on mine? (please)

I see. so a full-time 4wd gb would be achieved using a 5spd liberty gb? would i need to use the l-series tailshaft still? would it be a hard conversion?

The is a Full time 4wd L series box, if you find one it will do what your after, to go to the effort of fitting a Liberty box you might as well do the rest of the EJ conversion while your at it.

As far as weight goes going from dual range to single range wouldn't save you much more than a kilo.

And for the weight of your car, you have an MY don't you? even the heaviest wagons have a tare weight of about 1050kg i think you'll find that 1560kg is the GVM.

Ditching everything 4wd related might save you 30kg if your lucky, theres not really a lot you can do to reduce the weight of an MY, they didn't even come with carpet (tourers excluded) what else can you remove :?:

quicker way would be to pop an EJ18 into it. can be had cheap and you get fuel injection so economy comes up.
