was offroading a bit today and noticed that my rear wheels did not do much work when I get stuck... lazy bastards...

I was going uphill and got stuck and front was spinning while the rear just sat there and watched...

is there something I can do to lock-up in 50/50 so as to make the rear wheels do some work?

can this be cured with some playing around with the selenoids?

Sounds like you have an early auto....basically they are 2wd untill a piss weak clutch pack locks up and applies some of it to the rear, trouble is that clutch pack wears out real quick and doesn`t hold bugger all power even when its working.(which by this age it won`t be)

You want to look into getting a VTD auto, from a SVX, 94-96 wrx or <98 TT legacy. Do a search and look up some info. You can install the rear VTD bit onto your auto ...which can be done in the car...

the auto is from a '95 legacy/liberty turbo... is that the weak kind?

No weaker than what you`ve got ...most likely

Is your front diff casing drian plug on the bottom flat or on the edge ?

One from a WRX 94-96 JDM auto is supposed to be the best! ...but you could also just install the rear planentary, clutch stuff and housing(from the TT auto), onto the back of yours...and get a WRX vtd TCU to run it good.

YEs basically.....cause Oz didn`t get a auto wrx until 97....and the non turbo boxes are non VTD....its possible that the bits off an Oz 97>WRX auto would fit....if you can find one!.
