gearbox swap

Post by beau83 » Sat Sep 26, 2015 4:03 pm

i want to take a 5 speed manual gearbox from a subaru RX impreza 2.2L 98" 2wd with an EJ20 engine, and I want to put it into a subaru liberty 2.2L 99" selective AWD which currently has a 5 speed manual gearbox in it. my liberty gearbox seized up and i have the RX Impreza in the back yard. Will this conversion be a simple swap over or are there some major differences because of the selective AWD and 2WD SET UP? any info on this would be greatly appreciated, thankyou

Interesting question mate.

Since you have the whole 2wd setup it could be done - some things to look out for:

- different drive shafts. some 2wd units have a 23 spline count on the diff stub axles, the AWDs have 25 splines

- mount points for the rear of the gearbox may differ, the Impreza crossmemeber may not fit the liberty

- gear selector linkages may not fit the liberty

- clutch and flywheel setups different, but will be interchangeable to the EJ22

You'll have to leave the rear diff in or kill the rear drive shafts to keep the outer stub axles to keep the rear hubs together.

Easier still would be to source a gearbox from the same model of your liberty, direct swap, no fuss.

Where in NSW are you? and are you planning on opening the seized box up?

Cheers
