Starter Motor Help

Post by NachaLuva » Sun Nov 23, 2014 1:10 pm

Since my poor little Foz had a swim I started having starter motor problems. It would just click but not turn over when I turned the key. After turning the key a few times it would turn over as normal.

I've taken the starter motor off & taken the solenoid off that but have no idea what to do next...

Check your battery terminals and the positive and negative leads. I have had to remove and clean not only the battery terminal ends of the leads but the engine terminal points as well.

corrosion between the terminal ends the nuts, bolts or studs and body points will stop the current from getting to the starter.

It could also be the brushes in the motor itself

Battery terminals and where the leads bolts onto the starter motor are fine but the little lead that comes out of the wiring harness is filthy so I'll clean that. Do I need to put that electrical grease on it?

Can I clean the brushes?

Yes to both questions, electrical grease on the starter terminal is fine. Same for the battery terminals and leads.

You can get electrical contact cleaner from part stores, I use CRC CO contact cleaner.

Works really well, nitrile gloves are recommended.

Starter Motor Brushes can be changed. Should be able to find a breakdown diagram in the WSM
