E81 difference between hyd and solid lifter engines?

Post by Rainoski » Tue Apr 01, 2014 11:24 am

Hi all,

Have just bought a 1990 Brumby for a run about and treating it to a bit of a birthday...

Upon pulling the (black) rocker covers off I've found the valves to have no clearance, so I suspect that it has hydraulic lifters but what is the easiest way to check?
The engine has been re-cond at some point so it has no stickers on the covers and also does not have lock tabs on the rocker gear?

T.I.A for your help

Hi and Welcome Rainoski :)

If it doesn't have locking tabs then I'd say it's solid lifters. I'd adjust them to spec and then run the engine. You'll know from there if they hydraulic.

Does that mean the black rocker covered EA81 I have that has those nasty sharp square? lock tabs - it's a hydraulic liftered ?? They weren't in AUDM Subes, a few checks on numbers and things suggest the engine is the original one.

If they are black rocker covers with the little sticker that states not to adjust then yes
