Hey,

Got noisy tailshaft issues with the old wagon, swapped to a different tailshafe but its still pretty bad. I had a look at the UJ's on my spare tailshaft but they arnt the standard uj held in by clips. Are these even replaceable or does it require higher levels of butchery?

Had a quick search but couldnt find anything about it, can anyone shed some light on this for me?

All single piece shafts I've seen from Subaru have replaceable uni-joints. Have you cleaned out the dirt and crap that builds up? Apologies if you have, just they are hard to see the clips if the dirt is caked on. Pressed in ones can be replaced but need to take to someone like Veems or Trucklines to have done, so they can check the ballance afterwards.

Ok, Il get funky with it and see if I can get it apart. I did scrub one out with a toothbrush but looks like a press fit. Though I have been known to miss simpler things (think ea81 piston ;) ) Would be nice to get rid or the rattle.

Just checking (and sorry if this sounds insulting, it's not meant to) that you are looking at the correct side of the uni-joint? The clip should be on the inner side of the cup.

Ooooh righhht. Didnt look there. Not insulting, never even dabbled with tailshafts before and from my little knowledge I though the clip was on the outside of the cup. Geez they look like fun......

No worries. They are a little tricky but nothing that you couldn't handle. I would recommend you look at the Gregory's manual. I also recommend you mark the pieces so you can align them back up when you put it back together.

Yep, got Gregory on hand for a bit of bet time reading. Sussed it out, Il wait until the new parts arrive then do it in one sitting. I got that spare tailshaft off of Ken which is in my car now so Even if I completely stuff it up its not the end of the world.

Hehe, tempting. New bits should be here next week. To be honest though I havent been thinking about the tailshaft much right now. Bit worried I may have damaged my new motor. Put some thicker oil in it and it started burning it. Went back to the stuff I had in it but its still blows clouds out every now and then :(. Reeks of worn stem guides. Looking into it tomorrow.

Worn guides smokes like all fuji for first few hundred metres then clears up until cold again. Does it do that ? Did you use a Diesel grade oil with higher detergent content ? You might have just cleaned up the carbon seal on the top of the piston , need to wait for a build up again. Long haul at high speed fixed it for me once when I cleaned pistons up and reassembled

Nah, hot or cold it does it. Seems to do it taking off mostly. Once im going its fine, even if I stomp it.

Found oil in the airbox thismorning. Got a new filter, going to go over all my PCV system and install a catch can as Paul recommended a few weeks back :).

I was pretty happy with the valve stem guides. They have new seals on them. Could be headgasket I suppose. Or badly seated rings. Donno yet, will eliminate things one by one.

If you hadn't just rebuilt the engine, I would have said worn valve stem guides.

Did you replace the PCV?

Brand new, new hoses, busted out all the crud inside the plastic 3 way pipe. Certainly smelt and felt pretty oily. Got that catch can on there now so If its that it should stop it from doing it. Engine isnt anywhere as Breathy as my old motor was. Pulled the plugs and they all look good. Way to rich part throttle with some nice colouring towards the electrode. If it is burning oil around the rings it isnt burning much.

The rings are lining up and letting a little bit of oil through.. I don't know which post on this board I first read that in, but it could be a possibility.

only if the rings didn't spin and stayed in the exact same place all the time.

Having read that there was oil in the airbox, I would say that the thicker oil has found its way into the breather hoses and is two stroking the engine :)

Take it on a good long run and offroad as wel, I know just the place behind Brunswick :)

That should sort it out.

Its running good toonga, No 2 stroking as far as I can tell. Wouldn’t open valves prevent that anyway???

Just gonna keep driving it and see what it does. There is a huge advantage to having it puff smoke out the arse on takeoff. Say goodbye to tailgaters :D.

Just checked tracking on bearings, should be here next week. That rattle has inhibited the sweet note of ea81 mashing fuel and air together for too long ;).

Well, got jiggy with the prop shaft. Came apart with some heat and wd40. Had a bit of a hard time trying to clean the crud off before pushing the cups thru but I think it came out ok. Bit of a polish with some wet and dry and it will be good to go.

Anyone thinking of doing this definitely use heat.
