Hi I'm looking at buying a 2001 Subaru impreza GX and
Bloke I'm buying it off, when I asked him what the rattling
Noise was he said It was the thrust bearing, is this an
Expensive problem? And as I'm not a mechanic would
The car be worth buying? Any help would be great

Thrust bearing in engine or clutch?

The thrust bearing in the engine would be engine rebuild.

The thrust bearing (throwout bearing) is transmission or engine out, take you pick.

Then while you have either out, replace the clutch assembly, get the flywheel surface ground, and replace the spigot bearing. Don't use cheap clutch parts either.

More details about the vehicle in question would be helpful. And any advice we share is exactly that, advice.

There's a lot of time to get to the thrust bearing. IMO there's less items to be replaced if you remove the gearbox - namely coolant. It could come down to what the mechanic prefers to do.

Also have the spigot bearing replaced while you're at it ;)

Cheers

If it goes away when your foot is on the clutch then yeah is a thrust bearing. Happened to my lib, not hard to replace once you drop the box.
