Rear LSD Diff

I've been wanting to get a rear LSD diff for a while now & I just keep putting it off. Now my current diff is making noises so I want to do it soon.
From what I've heard discussed & seen 1st hand, a plated LSD seems to work the best with a lifted wheel

Where do I get one from & how much am I looking at?

Did either of you guys read my thread/posts on my new rear diff that's LSD...!!?!
I got a used 2005 Forester (base model X and manual) diff with 2 rear CV's for $150. It is the same ratio and 100% direct bolt into a manual SF along with both CV's(spares for me just incase, new CV's are $200 each!)...
It is a VLSD and will suit me until I get my locker built...
For a plated rear LSD your looking at around the $700 mark plus
I can notice onroad with my VLSD that the car doesn't chirp around corners when you corner hard

Nachaluva you'd never drive like this so you wouldn't notice it onroad
After seeing Stilson offroad with his, it does make a pretty big difference over the stock open diff... Especially in sand and mud where your not as bogged down or asmuch weight on one or to wheels like with rocks. It does still help on rocks as I've seen with Stilson in person.
If your on a tight budget then I'd recommend this for the best bang for buck mod other than a lift, a/t tyres and a bash plate. The diagnal spin or single wheel spin is the biggest issue that stops me at the present time offroad.
They are still expensive on ebay

OMFG How much?? What is it from?
EL_Feddo, I had trouble with that too! I thought about welding my stuffed open diff, but don't really wanna stuff the centre diff as the car is my daily driver.

Yeah mate I've been following your probs...IIRC you had the diff on the ground at work & your Foz out of action for a while. You got very down on it...understandable
So you said you notice a difference onroad, you're right I dont drive it that hard but I'm not an old lady either haha
I really want something that will help me climb loose rocky ground, ie, wheels lifted, without losing too much momentum.
remember Einstein....D=MC squared (D is distance covered, M is momentum & C is the "crazy factor")

:roll::twisted:

Well start saving for a Toyota Hilux and some air lockers... Subaru's aren't designed for rock crawling.
Yes they go good offroad for what they are, great in mud, sand, snow and gravel but not rock crawling. Why do think my diff broke in the first place... the car just isn't designed for that sort of stuff no matter how modified.
I have seen Stilsons stock SG Foz get up stuff I couldn't planly because his VLSD gave him just enough to keep him going up the hills. His biggest let down was the 1.191.1 low range vs our 1.1447.1.
I have since come to realize that they just aren't designed for that sort of shit, no wonder I blew the rear diff thrashing the car all the way up rocky and rutty hills at redline smashing into everything in my path. And the gearbox and 2 motors.. I am now taking a step back and just doing more camping/touring with moderate offroad stuff, like sand and mud. That's what they are designed for, getting away and having fun

My 2 cents worth anyway

When climbing loose, rocky or uneven ground, what really kills the diff (& prob CVs too) is when you get wheel spin, then the tyre suddenly bites & under load, sending a big shock through the system. If you can limit wheel spin or at least reduce that
sudden grip, you can limit the wear & reduce the risk of snapping something.
You're right, Subies arent built for
that kinda rough treatment, but they can still do a lot given some mechanical empathy...

Thanks mate, PM sent
Do you think it will be 4.11:1? & what would I need to do if anything to fit it?

if yours is automatic then it would be 4.11, if its manual - I think you have 3.9:1 in yours.

Hey also if a rear lsd starts spinning up on one side especially with an auto try applying the brakes the same time as acceleration. A bit like stalling it up. The spinning wheel can sometimes stop and the wheel with grip will take over.

You might be thinking of the liberty's but in the manual SF Foresters(non turbo) its definately 4.11 and 4.44 in the auto. then opposite in the turbo SF's. 4.11 in the aut0 and 4.44 in the manuql

Today I got some diff oil plus some advice on how to get the water emulsion out (a small amount of metho to mix the water with the oil was suggested...any other ideas?). Also a really handy filler tube that screws onto the oil bottle. Its called a "FloTool trans fluid &gear oil on/off spout", made by Hopkins Mfg Corp, for those gear freaks out there (like me lol)
Then I spent ages cleaning the layers of muck of the diff, but when I went to undo the plug with my 1/2" breaker bar, it was the wrong size...is it 3/4" or something? Or is there a special tool to use on the diff plugs
Also, there was no plate or writing of any kind I could see. I'm not worried, I'm sure its a 4.111 as several people have confirmed. It would have been nice to see it though...
