L 1.6 low range into ’97 Outback

Is it possible?

Have done a few EA lows into Gen1 DR lib boxes but never Gen2, Which I presume a ’97 Outback is? Pretty sure I’ve read somewhere a long time ago that the gen3 gearboxes can no longer take the L low but Gen2’s are still all good?

Just wanted to quickly double check before I strip down the gearbox and find out it can’t be made to fit.

Thanks,
Will

The front half of the input shaft gearset on gen 2 boxes are different, particularly the synchro ring - look at AlpineRaven's big thread for all you need to know about 1.6 low range into gen 2 boxes.

Deffinately possible as it has been done on similar gearboxes, however an easier option is dropping a 1st gen Forester low range in there. As far as i know it is a straight swap?

And the forester low range deffinately is more than capable enough considering the price and relative ease it can be done for.

If the box is being rebuilt though it is just as cheap to put in L-Series low range. You can get an L-Series gearbox for $100 and getting the gear shaven down to fit is cheapish.

Cheers guys, wasn't going to read that thread/tome at work but did anyway...

Appears I only need to lathe the selector ring carrier, already have the other bits modified and ready to go. About time they were used, have been sitting around for years now.

No way can I justify spending coin on Scorpion gear, as much as I'd love to have it.
Plus currently do not have the money, so not an option anyway.

I would make sure the selector fork slides in and out without interfering.. this is what I noticed on mine.
