Clutch Cover? Plate between engine and gbox

Putting the engine (EA82) back into my manual wagon. Left pressure plate bolts loose, clutch alligned easily enough. But that plate that attaches to the engine (2x 10mm bolts) was bent all out of shape. Running out of time to return the hired hoist I took it off and left it off. Engine went in real easy then :)

So do I need it in and how does it sit, ie under or over the gbox?

that little tin plate, bolts to the bottom of the engines bellhousing sits right up above the engine cross member so can't swap it in out unless either engine or cross member is out. Guess it keeps all the crap outta the clutch ara and is a good idea to have it in there.

Did you leave clutch pressure plate to fly bolts loose to assist clutch align - then tighten up through starter motor hole ?

Seems to be a gaping hole without it, Guess I will have to drop the cross member somehow. Yeah pressure plate to flywheel bolts loose as. Just that plate was bent all outa shape. My guess is the last person to join the engine and gearbox just used the bell house bolts to pull it all together and the plate was pretty mangled. Even deep grooves on the inside where the flywheel scraped for a while. Might need to find one in better condition. Auto doesn't appear to have one of these...

If only engine hoists didn't take up so much room. They are a PITA most of the time, but near invaluable when you need one and so $$$ to hire :(

One Subie nut I met had an old Hills swing set, missing all the swings with just a chain block - keep an eye out in the 'hood for one being thrown out!

You mean like this one:

circa NOV11

:D Works a treat until you try to lift something that's too heavy - we've now braced the A arms with a little arm to stop them from spreading, this has also increased the stability of the whole thing. The C section up top has been a feature since the first day we used it.

You can move it with one person, but for the tricker places two people move it a lot easier!

Cheers

I removed that guard. It was a pain when I changed my first clutch. Never used it again, never had problems without it.

The EJ motor i was putting in didn't have one, but the EA i was taking out did, so i made one up. It will take you about 10 mins to bend it and put a couple of holes in it.

its probably not needed, but i figured for 10 mins work its not even worth risking something going wrong.

+1.. I've removed many of them on my cars. IMO it's best not to have it.. makes it easier to wash sh*t out after playing in sand and mud :)

But to answer Smokey's question.. it goes under the g/box.

Thanks guys, so I'll leave it off for now and just concentrate on getting her going again after the HG work. Then next time I have a hoist or have time to support the engine and drop the cross member I'll put it back on. Seeing that it goes under the gearbox it will be easy enough to do :)
