Am buying a Bomb Brumby tomorrow for a farm ute and spares.
The front is not driving and the owner seems to think one of the front pinions is stuffed, but I think he means sun gear. CV's appear to be good with less tha 10,000ks on them
is there a common fault that this is likley to be and does the box need to be split to fix it.

I would be checking the front hubs where the CV"S bolt up to the discs. These are notorious for getting chewed out and the splines just disappear (one day I will take a photo of one) they look very similar to the hubs on the rear discs you just bought but have bigger splines.

Try putting the car into 4WD and if it drives with out making buckets of noise from the gear box then it is a hub.

Or if you are game enough in 2WD put it into 1st and let the clutch out, if it doesn't move but is still running, then get out and check the hubs one of the CV shaft nuts will be spinning freely.

Hey hang on. he said one of the front hubs keeps working loose and no amount of adjustment is fixing it. That kind of adds up with your diagnosis as well. Hope it makes the trip from Nambucca to Coffs tomorrow

Stop every five minutes and make sure it's still there. Or replace the split pin with something larger!!

Is the spline on the CV likley to be still OK. If so I will fit amother hub before I make the trip. If it is likley to be damaged then I'll wait till I get it back home and replace the CV end, pretty sure I have one of them to.

I agree with the others in saying it's most likely to be the drive hub. I've had this many of times (as I'm sure many EA model Subie models owners have) but you will need to check the outer CV spline. I'm sure there will be some were but due to the fact that is made from High Temp Carbon Steel (as apposed to the case mild steel of the hub) it more than likely can be used again. Just make sure you clean it with a wire brush.

Two good pieces of advice I can give you is, 1. Make sure the taper washer has no sharp lips on it. As this can stop the large nut from being tightened up properly and 2. Make sure you do that nut up really tight !!

Have a spare nut, tapered washer , washer, split pins and hub.
Just incase for the trip back have some engine oil, water (cause it has a heating problem, but after speaking to my dad he seems to think the radaitor could be partialy blocked cause it only spews out some water then the level settles) and some tools.

seen a new , as in 2 weeks old, made in china cv split and spit at 4am on the highway

The 4WD lever did things nicely up onto the tow truck

Means the Brum will get retirement on me mates farm and won't get wrecked.

Drive it to a car park for a play park near the Golf course at Nambucca and fitted another hub. Drove it home to coffs 2wd no probs.

Oh i'm fixen her up but not for the "on" road. Still working on her right now.
