Oil level query

I'm really happy with my ea81. It's purring like a kitten.

I noticed when I first did my conversion I had topped the new oil up to full and topped it up after running hot so the oil filter filled etc.

I noted the oil level dropped to about 3mm under the top line in a short period and now it has stayed there ever since. Its a little over half way from top mark to low mark. So it uses very very little oil but seemed to drop initially. Am I correct in assuming that being a flat engine when the oil level is on the top mark it could burn off a little then settle at that point?

Everytime I check it now it is at the same point which is good but I'm curious as to the initial drop.

The only change has been the rotating of the dip stick and its tube to point rearwards but that should change the level of how it reads.

NO, not settle like radiator water levels in my experiences (says the fella who has same thing, oil down about 3mm and needs change in 700km) Things bedding in ?

yes always give it afew minutes to settle, then top it up accordingly. It will take afew seconds for the oil to make its way thru the motor.

I do this, crank it over and let it idle for afew seconds, turn it off and then check it again

Yeh, generally I have naught to worry about but am jsut curious. Its not going through oil and thats the main thing. But I dont think I'll top it right up to the top mark- just under might be ideal.

the manual list 3 types of dipstick for the EA motor,

there are probably more

but filled is to the dot or the line

a little below or above (3mm) won't cause any harm.
