EJ25 blowing smoke...

Post by Thalass » Thu Oct 20, 2011 4:50 pm

Hey guys. The old Outback is playing silly buggers again. When the engine is cold it's blowing a bit of smoke.

I feared that water was getting where it shouldn't but the water levels are unchanged. However she is using oil - not very fast though. The last bloody thing i need right now, but there you go. There aren't any oil stains on the driveway, and the underside looks clean enough so i'm a bit scared it's a gasket or something.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

what colour is the smoke? if it has a blue tinge it is oil, white is coolant and grey is buy a new motor.

A small amount of steam is normal as the engine warms up and condensation in the exhaust is turned to steam.

How many KMs has the motor done? it could be oil getting past the rings if the engine has high KMs.

Is the PCV working properly?

Well as far as i know the car has only had one engine, which makes it 240,000km old. It's had it's second 100k service recently (a bit late  )

As for the PCV. We changed a PCV on the intake manifold for the 100k, but i don't know about any others.

Yep.. I replaced it at the 100,000km service but I'm thinking it's been a while since I've seen the car Ben, so best to drop over next time I'm home (just over 3 weeks)

Right-o thanks, Paul. I'll see when i can set it up - I'm on course around that time so it'd have to be on the weekend if that's ok with you.

It's definitely blue, and stops once the engine warms up (or, at least, it reduces to the point where i can't see it billowing behind the car while i drive.). Damn thing.

No probs Ben.. just give me a call

revmax.. nah, it's a Gen3 Outback with the EJ25 SOHC engine. I'm guessing that the valve stem seals are due.

My thoughts too Paul. Parts shouldn't cost much, but labour could be a bitch - its a bloody fiddly job!

Cheers
