Brumby rear drive shaft removal

Is their a trick to removing the rear drive shafts out of a Brumby diff ?
I have removed the pins running through the cv and the diff output shaft so I thought the shafts would just fall off but they just will not move.
I had to bash the crap out of the hubs with a sledge hammer to get them off so I assume this end is just the same - stuck on after 30 years and hundreds of thousands of kms of abuse.
I have tried a bit of gentle persuasion but maybe I need a more aggressive approach
