If my photo uploading skills have stayed with me...

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

These pics (there we go, only one pics came up, yet I gave them and watched as three pics uploaded :( ) should show the LHS rear end of a single range AWD box from a turbo Vortex
Looking for some info regarding the three switches shown - the only ones on the box

Most forward are thicker gauge red/ white trace in and out

Next rearward lowest is lime green / yellow trace and black
Last at the back upper are black in and out

Anyone got the experience to know what these are.

Can only think one is reverse light switch, another to indicate the diff lock or is it centre diff ? is engaged

Having been told the gearshift levers are same as L Series am sort of now non believer as the box has studs on a plate for the shifter to bolt its stay to, the bolt spacing is different to L Series PT4WD shifters. A mod may make them fit.

Any help on wire codes is appreciated

Jonno

And that South Australian mud !! Wonder if the oil well mud doctors know about its properties? Holy cow, does it stick like baby poo to a blanket - tenfold!! Mix a little sand and oil with it and well I am in for a fun time finding the rest of this gearbox. Have given these regions a shot of Lanotec to see if the sheeps wool fat softens the gunk while I wait for my rotary tool brushes from ebaychina

Funny that looks just like the one in my garage, without the SA mud. When I get a chance tonight I will have a look and help you out unless anyone else has firsthand info:)

Ok R/RW wire sw is reverse, Grn/Blk seems to be when 4th forward is selected. Blk/Blk not sure:???: Need to clean my example cause the muck is giving me the sh@#$ and I wanna keep my DMM in good nick. Haven't checked the Sw under the Difflock lever as yet.

Ok black wires Sw is neutral for ECM signal and Sw under difflock lever is for just that according to FSM.

I reckon a spray of carby clearer would get it off in short order , should call it hydraulic spray cause it'll lift virtually anything - including grease out of carpet .

From Subawrek to Discotech to your cave !

Now the 87 factory WSM covers the dual range AWD boxes , sadly not the single range AWD ones and I think we can improvise here .

From side views of the extension housing I believe the upper left hand one is the reversing switch , the lower middle one the diff lock pilot switch , the upper rear one a neutral switch which I think all MPFI 4 ECU plug cars have .

It wouldn't be too hard to work out by process of elimination .
The neutral switch should have continuity except in any gear .
The diff lock switch should only have continuity when its locked .
The reverse switch should only have continuity when in reverse gear .

Its also quite possible that part time boxes use the same switches and wire trace colours though the diff lock one could indicate 2wd/4wd .
All MAF MPFI cars should have four gearbox switches if dual range - the extra one to show when in low range .

My cars AWD box has the matching sub loom for the AWD transmission though all it shows is when its in LR . I've never tried to lock the center diff but I wouldn't mind betting the 4WD would light up on the dash - being an Aust spec PT car originally .
My reversing lights work and being a 3 ECU plug car Ellie's vane AFM EFI system doesn't need a neutral switch .

Hope this helps , cheers A .

Actually chased the wiring diagrams too .

Back up light switch - G and GW .
Center diff-lock indicator switch - LR and B . Same colours on 4WD DR diag .

Low Range switch - G and B for DR AWD box in RHD cars .

OK guys , thanks, got a bit of a heads up now on these. Must have a closer look to see if another switch is under the cable locker on the other side. Would have got me thinking on a switch that shows fourth gear only, and another for neutral. Could be used for other porpoises, like no start unless in neutral, and electric fan cut out in fourth. Need to find some better shifter bushes. These 4WD shifters used to lay on the ground beneath L wrecks at the wreckers until a recent clean up :)

Disco has hinted at the fact that this box was once in his possession at a time he was short of carby cleaner and became excess to his requirements. I left a testicle with the pawn brokers to raise the capital - get it back about Xmas 2012 :) . The mating EA82T to this box is the reco'd one Adrian is running currently I believe? So, instead of Adrian tripping over it, it's my turn

Now, anyone know the working truth between AWD single shifter levers and 4WD PT on the L Series - are they swappable ? Convertable ?

My memory escapes me but I think I typed something about that in one of the threads when my box went in .

I'll search later , cheers A .

Thanks, but your box was an EJ box with EA front casings wasn't it? And they have an angled selector rail rather than a straight horizontal direction into the box. I ordered a set of selector bushes and sleeves (horrorzontal and vertical axis just out of the box) to give everyting its best chance, given some of my bits are missing. Looking at sketches there is a difference of the rods from AWD 5 speed Vortex to PT4WD of the L series, but may just be due to differences of Vortex body and L Series

Hey Jonno, checked out an xt fsm I have and here is what is listed for the full time s/r trans with diff lock.
back up switch RY
neut switch Lg & B
diff lock pilot RY
hope this helps, Mark
my info shows the diff lock switch on opposite sides from the other switches, same with the d/r awd with diff lock as well

Goes out to shed to have that look on the other side.......
Now wondering why I did not see that one so plain as day. On the right side down low is Red/White trace in and out.
Guess I can test things when I can change gears on the floor. May be some differences in colour codes for different markets perhaps. Definitely looks white stripe trace.
Thanks guys

Jonno check this attachment out.
Top is Vortex S/R
Middle is P/T S/R (dont have complete ASSY)
Bottom is RX FT D/R

Hope this is of use...

Some day I will figure out how to paste pic onto post reply instead of annoying attachments

Just right click on the attachment and select "Copy Shortcut" or "Copy Link"

Then simply paste it into the post and add Image around it

It will look like this

(ive added the star to make the image code visible)

And the finished product

Giles, plan is to finish what I started before next big idea, being get my ageing BRumby going with at least an EA82 bitsa then maybe whack the turbo and engineers cert on it. before then I have this box to shove behind the EA82T currently in my 4GLTA, the sedan with amazingly crap rear suspension clearance so no need for low range, then I may ruin the versatility of BRum with the AWD box single in it, but loose that loss of traction problem I have with it now, and the ten psi of boost does not help :) :) and ditch the 4GLTA as I had intended in 2006

Why not add dual range to the box? You'll need a dual range EA casing, some welding skills for alloy (for dedent ball and spring) and an EJ AWD gearbox for the gearsets to work with the EA AWD pinion shaft and locking centre diff. I'm pretty sure all of this is lego, the hardest part is finding the gearset ratios that will suit you best...

Cheers
