Forester gearbox issue

A mates son has a 2000 model Forester and it has a couple of issues.

1. the ring gear came off the flywheel. Is this a known issue for the 2000 model or foresters in general ?

2. to put the ring gear back on the gearbox was slid forwards and once the ring gear was reinstalled the gearbox was slid back into place but now the car pops out of high range 4WD from time to time. I was not present when the work was carried out so I am going on a verbal explanation of the work done but I am assured the 4WD linkage is cable, nothing was bent and there were no left over parts. I suggested an adjustment but was told nothing was touched in this area.

My mate is very capable, has an engineering backgroud with plenty of practical experience so I cant doubt his work quality.

Any thoughts on why the ring gear come off in the first place and why the car may be jumping out of gear as well as what to do about it.

Ring gear coming off the flywheel sounds like a once off, but im a little puzzled why the gearbox was slid forwards and how the ring gear was just put back on.

I would have thought that either the engine would have been slid forwards, or the gearbox slid back (if it was the latter, that could explain a slightly bent select mounting)

How was the ring gear replaced? A new flywheel or just welded back onto the old flywheel?

My mistake the gearbox was slide back and the engine was left as is/was
The ring gear was put back on with Loctite and a few tacks of weld applied.
I believe the long term aim is to replace the flywheel/ring gear
Any other thoughts as to why the car is jumping out of high range ?

As the Forester uses the cable system to select low range then I'm guessing there is either a bend in it or a clip has come off somewhere
