Have recently acquired an Impreza RS 2.5 auto & have a question regarding the performance of the auto transmission. I find it reluctant to change down to 1st or 2nd at the exit from slow corners even when using WOT to try and make it change down. Sometimes a second stab at WOT will finally cause the auto to drop down a gear or two, but mostly the car just continues in the same gear with mediocre acceleration.
I have another late 80s car with a fully hydro 4 speed that is more responsive.

Does the accelerator click when you push the accy pedal to the floor. Sometimes floor mats that have slipped forwards make it hard to push the pedal all the way to the floor, preventing the kick down switch from activating.
Have you tried with the "Power" button on?

There is a click when I press the accelerator to the floor but this did not help & I thought the down change control on an electronic auto would be more suttle than a simple switch.
Would expect the engine load conditions to dictate the auto action, why else would the MAP sensor signal be fed to the auto control box. At least this is the info I have for a 2002 Impreza RS.
