Hi, I am about to install the heads on my 97 ej20 (n/a) and am trying to find the head bolt torque specs and tightening pattern.
Also do I need apply some sort of sealer on the bolts?
Thanks

Cheers, I couldn't get a hold of one for my year, but you reckon using the 02' specs for sohc would be the same?

Pav give me a little while I think I may have found the manual you are after
Im just downloading it now to make sure it isn't 150 meg of viruses
EDIT: no SOHC engine section

in the one I found
Ive since looked through 3 different engine manuals legacy 92, liberty 95 impreza 2002 and all 3 have the same values for the SOHC engine
INSTALLATION
1) Install the cylinder head and gaskets on cylinder
block.
CAUTION:
Use new cylinder head gaskets.
Be careful not to scratch the mating surface
of cylinder block and cylinder head.
2) Tighten the cylinder head bolts.
(1) Apply a coat of engine oil to washers and
bolt threads.
(2) Tighten all bolts to 29 N.m (3.0 kgf-m, 22 ft-
Ib) in alphabetical sequence.
Then tighten all bolts to 69 N.m (7.0 kgf-m, 51 ft-
Ib) in alphabetical sequence.
(3) Back off all bolts by 180" first; back them off
by 180" again.
(4) Tighten the bolts (a) and (b) to 34 N-m (3.5
kgf-m, 25 ft-lb).
(5) Tighten the bolts (c), (d), (e) and (f) to 15
N.m (1.5 kgf-m, 11 ft-lb).
(6) Tighten all bolts by 80 to 90" in alphabetical
sequence.
CAUTION:
Do not tighten the bolts more than 90".
(7) Further tighten all bolts by 80 to 90" in alphabetical
sequence shown below.
CAUTION:
Ensure the total "re-tightening angle" [in the
former two steps], do not exceed 180".

Well if the 92,95 and 02 models are the same then I'd say the 97 would also be the same. I've installed them now going by the 02 specs (the ones you posted above). And it seems good so thanks for that.
As for the 97-98 impreza manuals, I've downloaded three manuals and even bought one from ebay and all of them did not have a SOHC section. Seems a dodgy copy is floating around, I think best bet is to pay the $35 and download the official manuals from the Subaru Tech website.
Cheers

Pav according to every FSM I found on the internet it seems that Subaru didn't make a SOHC EJ20 in 1997 . all have the DOHC section but every single one I downloaded has nothing on the SOHC engine. (yes we know they did:) )
I do know from reading every section on SOHC motors that I have since my last post, that the torque down procedure is the same in every FSM ( I have). the only difference is the use of the numbers 1-6 in the early models to denote the bolt tightening sequence which changes a-f in the later FSMs.
It might be best to go to Subaru and pay the money for future reference
