G'day,

in doing an ej conversion and am
wondering if I can use the ej shifter
in my vortex
or do I have to to modify my stock ones?

For that matter is the reverse also possible?

Ej shifter on a ea box?

Although I havnt gotten this far yet on my conversion I asked around also and found that the ej linkage can be used but it may need to be shortened up to align with your console, and im my case the lift will work to my advantage and short shifting it can prevent interference also.

Not entirely sure what you are doing from your description there but I can offer some multi-use advice I think.


If you are using an EA gearbox in an L series, use the EA shifter linkage setup unmodified.

If you are using an EJ gearbox in an L series, you have to use the EJ shifter linkage setup that comes with the EJ gearbox.
To make it work in the L series, you need the little rubber mount for the rear of it. This is easily bolted to the L series tunnel. You also need to shorten the two rods of the setup by approximately 1" (I can't quite remember what it was for an unlifted L series but it's best you just fit it up and see what is required yourself before cutting it). There are two important points to be aware of when doing this mod.
1 - Shorten both the shifter rod itself, and the mounting rod by the same amount.
2 - Be sure to put a straight line down the rods in texta, going over where you cut it, so when you weld them back together you are certain that you haven't let them twist/rotate at all.

It's a very simple mod. Check how much you need to shorten it, cut it down, weld back together.


Also note that the fact you are shortening your shifter doesn't have anything to do with "short shifting". This is an entirely unrelated thing. A "short shifter" is a shifter linkage which has a different angle at the bottom, near where it goes into the pivot section which changes the amount of "throw" you need to get it to go into gear. You aren't changing that angle by doing this mod, the shifter should feel pretty much the same as it did when it was in the EJ donor vehicle.
If you want a "short shifter" for the more sporty shifting action you are best off getting one off the shelf (Ultrex sells them online and are very cheap) - naturally you will have to cut/weld to shorten the rods to make it work in the L series though.

Hey H-Top, remember you'll need to make lots of mods to make the gearbox fit and there is lots of info on this site that can help as the Vortex floor plan is the same as the L.Series, so search for EJ conversions in Ls What gearbox is coming out? I would be interested in it if you haven't got any plans for it?
