Ok I have (as you all know) an EA81 motor and box. The motor is fine but the box hates first gear and simply won't go in. Is there any known cause for this? Or is the box just broked and I should get another one?

Sounds like poor clutch release, is it the same in reverse?

Thats just it. There is no clutch on it. I have seperated the motor and box.
It only does it for 1st. I can get every other gear.

Chris, take a look at this article from How Stuff Works - http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission1.htm once you have read that and understand how a transmission works then you'll have a better idea of why your gearbox is behaving the way it is.

i presume you have the single rail box so here is what i would pay atention to. look at the back of the box where your selector links to the box. it sits in a socket at the bottom of the selector. this could be worn but won't cause you to lose 1 gear only(unless just reverse goes). Near the middle of the selector is an attachment that is a sleeve for the selector shaft. the sleeve is copper in colour when not blackish with shite. it slides oves the selector shaft and has a pin through the middle of it and the shaft supposedly locking them in together. i had a sloppy box(on my brumby that is) and thanks to mark at subareck, i now have no movement except for sweet slips into gear. What i would do is hold the sleeve that is over the selector shaft, and wiggle it around to see how much play is in it. if it wiggles around but the selector shaft wiggles with it, your internals are worn and thats a pros job, not mine. if it wiggles around a lot and the selector shaft isn't moving with it as you would expect it to, then you need to modify a little. it is easy. let me know if i need to go further.

when it comes to your lawn mower, i would get dad to buy a newy and get mum to mow the lawn....lol

Unfoprtunately I dont live with mum (yippee). And dad cant do the mowing as he is allergic to freshly cut grass. Nearly killed him 10 yrs ago. And im getting that way as well. As for the mower, we are up for a new one soon as well. The pushy one is rusting and the ride on is nogo at the moment.
