Hi guys - have not been on the forum for some time (been playing with old BMWs) but I have been offered an Outback - 97 I think - with the 2.5 dohc motor with a blown head gasket - my question is will a Liberty 2.2 fit in there (a friends got a good one for $250) without too many problems or would it be better to fix the 2.5 ? cheers pitscars

8 posts since Dec 08.. haha.. yes it has been a long time :) Glad to see you still interested in Subies

As for the Outback.. this is just my opinion but I think you'd kick yourself if you fitted a EJ22 instead of the EJ25.. I'd just remove the EJ25 skim the heads and put a set of MLS gaskets on there and replace anything else that might look a bit suss as well :)

How much can you pick the Outback up for?

If it's still licenced then grab it and just do the head gaskets.. They are still getting 6 to 8 grand for clean ones :)

Yes cheers for that - the guy that owns the liberty has apparently got to one of the camshaft bearing cap bolts with a cold chisel (eeeek!) and damaged the cap - er somewhat - but I guess that would be fixable - would fitting a new or second hand cap mean line boring ?

replacing the EJ25 with the EJ22 seems to be a common swap on USMB. Probably worth checking over there
