Removing engine and transmission together?

Hey guys
Well the work has started of the transfer between my liberties...
I'm wondering if it is possible to remove the engine and transmission together in one go?
I was wondering if I... remove the radiator, the transmission's crossmembers... then pull the whole thing up and out with the engine crane.
I was mainly worried about the length...
Anyone done it this way before? I figure it'll save me a bunch of time.
Cheers,
Owen.

Done it with a chain block where i have heaps of height, check your crane can lift the length of them over the rad support panel first.

yes do it at one go, lot easier that way - LOT easier... (with right tools and knowledge) you could get the engine/box out in 45 mins) You need to remove the rad as well.

Hi,
I generally drop everything downwards on most cars. Engine, gearbox, cross member suspension etc Putting an EJ and auto into an L series from the top had to drop the crossmember a little anyway to make it fit.

Yeah, I've done it from above (motor only) & below...........so much easier to leave everything in one piece, undo the X members & struts then just lift the front of the car up and drag it out/roll back under

Agreed. This is how I did my EJ conversion in Ruby Scoo, except I had the front of the car jacked right up instead of leaving the crossmember on the floor and jack the car... Didn't think of that!

my preference is engine out first then tranny or box of gears, depends on your hoist, not only on its capacity but its stability and where yu attach chains to. Have used one of those 150kg foundry blocks of iron on the crane base to assist in stability.

Also helps to take the wheels off & you'll need to tie a piece of bar/wood across the top of the struts once everything is out to make maneuvering them easier, also keep a jack under the front of the motor as it may try to tip forward and squash your head like mine tried to when I undid the last bolt...........Missed by "that" much.

ive always lifted it thru the engine bay. All in one piece yes. Dropping it back in is just as easy as lifting it out.

Drain it and plug it with a rag.

Used a plastic bag (over the tailshaft end) and tape it up at the end of the tailshaft - works well.

It's about ten bucks for a set of plastic plugs. Use them on any gearbox then.
