GT foz auto box Questions

Got a GT auto Foz for thoughs playing along at home.
I think it could possibly be suffering from belt slip inside the AWD auto box.

Anyone know how i can test if this is deffinately happening or signs that it's happening??

Whats involved in "getting them tightened" or replaced?
PLEASE tell me it can be done with the box still in the car through the trans sump hole.

Anyone had it done with a cost estimate??

Am i better off with a new box or 2nd hand one?

Any recomendations for a place in Perth that could be up for the challenge or is this somehting i might be able to do myself?

Any comments or suggestions would be great.

Thanks
Dave

what i have noticed with boxes that have band problems is a noticable thud or thump when changing up through the gears the box isn't smooth and can change from 1st directly to 3rd

the best way to find out is to wait until you are doing about 80 km/h then accelerate suddenly if the box drops back a gear and then smoothly changes back again as you accelerate the bands are ok

if the box drops back and gets jittery not good eg drops to second instead of third and the can't decide which gear it wants to be in (not good on the open highway)

if you don't have the factory workshop manual

it is for the impreza but it does go through the tests to help work out whats wrong

and adjusting the bands isn't that hard if you have the right size torque wrench to do it

Nice work Julian :)

Dave.. I used to use Clifford Automatic many years ago as he was right into his Subies but I'm not sure if he's around anymore :???: the only other person I can think of is the Rigoli boys. I know they are east but maybe you could get incontact with them and they will help you out. They play with many Turbo autos in their drag car and know them inside out :)

can you provide the code on the auto box near the stater motor. I may be able to help with one from a crash test car.

Far out... looks very easy to do.. Unfortunately after reading what Toonga has posted about testing it the bands might actually be ok.. Just seams like it might be slipping... much like a manual would slip if it had a bad clutch... could it be the torque converter??

If you got slip you and overheat you got burning fluid and the red goes brown black and smells of burning something synthetic - these things got a dip stick to remove for smell inspection?

Surely easiest and cheapest is to suspect cat - but you are the one driving it not us making remote diagnostics a little harder, AND THE SUSPENSE.......... !!!!!!!!!!

And the cat is clean dry sort of dirty to play with unlike heavy mother of a tranny and all the fluid lines and places fluid comes out and sneaks up yer sleeves :)

I know this may sound stupid but you have checked the transmission oil level at running tempreture I take it you have a knowledge of its service history I can't remember who makes it but get a tin of the transmission conditioner/cleaner and run it with that for a few days see if it makes a difference

otherwise as Steptoe has said what colour is it (use a white cloth or tissue to check colour) if it is any colour but transmission fluid red drain the lot (8.5 litres :() and replace it with good stuff and a tin of transmission conditioner.

I have a 92 liberty that I thought had a stuffed trans when i bought it as some numpty had put trans oil in the diff thinking that was where you filled the transmission I was told initially that at a cost of 3500 dollars I could have the box reconditioned as the oils had mixed and the box was rooted, my long time mechanic mate laughed and said drop the oils and put in new stuff (in the right places) I did and the diff housing has never had red oil in it since and althought the front seal leaks abit the new oil (and a conditioner) made a huge difference

checked fluid then... it seams to the right level and is a dull red colour...

I will investigate the Cat option on the weekend. But i really thought the cat problem would effect the boost level on my guage.. maybe im wrong here.

I will ask about how to check the Cat in my other post.showthread.php?t=16210&page=4

It isn't a turbo box but by god it is cheap it would probably cost more to get it freighted than the buy it now price
