Cant get the torque converter on

Tom and i were trying to put the newly fwd converted auto box into Toms newly acquired Gen1 liberty and we cant get the torque converter to slide all the way onto the input shaft. It stops about 20mm short.

We have tried everything, and even managed to damage one of the seals on the oil pump drive shaft.

Is there a trick to it?

have you tried turning the engine over by hand/or socket on the front of the engine?

That is my trick is to push hard as I can and get someone to turn the engine over (not start it up) and does work for me.

Nah this is before we line up the engine, we are trying to get the torque converter onto the gearbox.

Sorry that I didnt read properly... Mmm.... sure its the right converter-gearbox? I was thinking for one second that there could be offset spline that has to line up correctly? Have you tried oiling the seal?

I once had a Liberty auto box that had a extra piece of machined cylindrical section (about 15cm in length) that seemed to extend the snout of the torque converter. I had to pull it out of the box once the converter was out. I had to use a stiff peice of wire with a hook on the end of it. It had a weird circlip (about 20 to 30mm clip section) that held it to the torque converter whilst you slide the converter in and you must turn it as you push the converter into the box.

But I'd look inside the box with a torch and check for anything stopping it.

Yeah i took that circlip out in case it was stopping it, but it didnt make any difference.

well if yours has the circlip then you'll also need to pull out that cylinder thing (more than likely it's still in the box) and put that on your torque converter (with the circlip in) before trying to put the converter in the right spot. It will mean your snout of the converter will be around 25cm long before you try sliding it back in. Just look for that cylinder item. I'll see if I can dig up something in the workshop manual.

Yeah we pulled out the cylinder, attached it to the TC with the circlip. This is how we tried to do it first because the TC came out with the cylinder attached.

We also tried putting the TC on without the cylinder in place, didnt make any difference.

How tight is the TC supposed to be attached to the smallest shaft? The TC that came with the broken box is attached to that little shaft and wont come off, the shaft actually pulled out of the gearbox.

You putting a TC off another box onto current box or back on same box it came off? I don't quite understand autos and most always toss them not refit them. Vaseline if it is soft obstruction, or is it solid grounding metallic clunk not gong any further sound?

Ok.. I believe that the cylinder piece needs to be attached to the TC before you slide it back in or the circlip wont line up again.

also, the smallest shaft I'm led to believe is the oil pump shaft and must be in the box first before trying to put the TC back in. If it's stuck in the TC then I'm guessing that this is the problem and you my need to use another TC or have yours recond.

I forgot to mention that when you're trying to put the TC back in, at the last stage of the TC going back in, you'll need to support the weight of the TC with one hand (cupping your pointer finger and thumb) and also trying to push the TC in, then using the other hand to spin the TC and also assist in pushing the TC in.
