Newer EA81 in older body, fuel return line?

So I've got a 91 EA81 engine in a 83 Leone sedan. The 83's didn't have a return line but instead ran a pulse fuel pump that stops when it reaches enough pressure. At the moment I've just blocked up the return line but I am having some troubles with starting after the car has been running. If I restart it within a few minutes its fine. But if I leave it half an hour or more you have to crank and crank and crank it before it splutters to a start. I was thinking because there is no return line maybe the carb is getting hot and the fuel is expanding and flooding the carb? If I leave the car a couple of hours it does not have the problem and runs fine.
Do I need a return line, can I do something else which will get around not putting one it, or is this problem caused by something else?

You could drop the older non return style carbie on the top of the newer motor - the only problem I see here is that there will be differences in vacuum hoses.
Or you could take the carbi and manifold off the older EA81 block and go that way

try going back to a pulse fuel pump it could solve the problem otherwise you might need to run a return line to stop the flooding problem

I'm running a pulse fuel pump. The standard one for the car.
That would be all swell El Freddo if I had the old engine and anything attached to it from this car. The fact is I bought the car as a rolling body and placed a 91 Brumby motor I bought from lizard in it. Not wanting to spend any money replacing large parts like carbs etc on this car as I plan to sell it very soon. Just need to get it running good before I sell it.

Do you get any pressure buildup in the fuel tank? like *whoosh* when u take the cap off when the car is hot and the problem is occurring? Maybe needs a new fuel cap with a release valve in it or something.

Hmm.. Not that I know of. I'll have to go try and see now that its been hot all day......
No there isn't any pressure in there. And there should not be as all my vent hoses are hooked up properly to the charcoal canister.
