Im sorry if this has already been answered but I was curious how the single range 4wd systems work on the GL wagons. Mainly what I need to know is with the single range transmissions in the 1981 subaru GL wagon with the 4 speed manual when you shift into 4wd does that mean that it is equivelent to 4 hi or 4 low. I always thought that they were in 4 low but now im not sure.

the single range 4wd box has high range only

while this article/thread is on building a dual range AWD box it does explain (in pictures) the difference between a single range box and a dual range box

Nah, its a push button 4WD in these subarus, I think they were vacuum operated which they will switch to 4WD High instead of FWD and they dont have 4WD low..

Yes its full time 4WD with Single Range & dual range, if it was push button 4WD it would be different.

AP we're talking about an MY here so I'm not sure how its activated but as Toonga says, its only high range... And I wouldn't have a clue as to how to go about building up a dual range, it would be best to drop a dual range box in and call it a day ;)

Cheers
