I just sold the EA71 that came out of my MY sedan and as i was loading it onto this guys trailer, i noticed these two little tags on the heads, stuck on with RTV sealant. They say "Void if Removed"




I also noticed a sensor on the exhaust port, and the only thing i can think it could be is a exhaust gas temperature sensor. (it can also be seen in the above pic as well)


There is various sensors that arent hooked up and it doesnt have the normal EA71 intake manifold or carby.



Maybe there was a reason this engine revved so hard and went so well.

I kinda have sellers remorse cos i sold it, a 3sp gearbox and diff for $100

That to me looks like a EA71 engine from a L.Series. This was a very common engine in Japan due to their rego. The smaller the engine the cheaper your rego was (hence the 2 cyl Sherpa). I used to sell a lot of these engines back when there was a lot of L.Series in Japan but to answer you question...

1. the little grey discs are heat discs, put on by engine fitters to make sure owners didn't over heat their engine then try and claim warranty on them. The centre section (made of lead) would melt out if the engine got too hot.

2. You are correct on saying it's a exhaust temp sensor. It was fitted to any engine that used a cat converter.

Can you tell me more about the temp sensor?

Is it as simple as a K or N type thermocouple probe or is it a simple resistive thermistor? What is its range?

Gannon they are normally a cat overheat warning device as in dash light warning .

My R33 Skyline has one too .

If you look at the back of the red lights on L series dash where the no brakes, ECU lights are there is one spot not in use says ex temp.
