I'm wondering.. My Brumby's cooling system is completly fine when running and the car is moving keeping the gauge in a normal 'warm' location but when the car is running and sitting still the car naturally starts to heat up which in other cars i have had would trigger the therofan but in the Brumby it doe not turn on until the gauge reaches close to 3/4. i have been told this is nothing unusual for this car but I'm keen to look after the old girl a bit and keep it a bit cooler since its now a 20 year old car I was thinking of installing one of these :

Is this overkill?

I don't think it's overkill, we used to have a system like this on the RX7 and it worked a treat.

I don't know what the quality of this product is which could be a problem (especially if 4wd'n). The other way to do it is to setup a manual switch to turn the fan on and off when you want. Use a relay or find the wire to switch the system and tap into that to trigger the fan. If you have AC the two fans should come on at the same time when the car's temp is high.

If you don't know the history of the radiator it could be a good idea to have it rodded - this is a process where they take off an end tank and push a rod down each channel to clear any debris that has been collected or built up over time. This will let you know the general condition of your radiator and give it a clean too. Put fresh coolant in it and go from there.

If you don't have AC or a mechanical fan it might be a good idea to source and fit the mechanical fan - it will keep some air flowing through the radiator while sitting in traffic...

Thanks for your reply I do have 2 fans atm one for AC and one for thermo, i have been using the AC to test it out as i just bought the car and the AC fan fixes the issue i'm talking about but i dont want to have to turn on the AC when the car is getting warm. I also think the system above is a brand i have not heard of but what about this system:

I've heard this brand name before.

It only takes moments for the fan to do its job once it is turned on which leads me to believe that the radiator is fine but i still might follow your suggestion to get it looked at.
