welded lseries rear with 215r15 tyres

hey guys has anybody run a welded rear with tyres this big, will the cv's and axles be able to handle it ? ive run welded rear on standard tyres, but nothing this big.

If you have 215 (unknown height) 15" at the front and rear (all same size all around) it'll be ok, but you'll notice wear quicker in the rears.

all the tyres are the same size , 215/80r15 (the old way to list 80 profile was to not put it in , think they might have been 82 profile or something but close enough to 80.)
provided i weld the rear centre strong enough lol

when your onroad, jack the drivers side rear wheel off the ground, punch out the roll pins and remove the cv shaft completely, then put it in before any offroad trips and you'll be right, makes no difference when removed on road because that wheel is free spinning

yeah sorry guys i know the trick with removing the axle onroad , i was more worried with full power hillclimbs etc offroad. it will be in a parttime 4wd lseries .

AH L series.. Fair enough... (if it was AWD then you'll damage the centre diff)
Yep can be done if you removed the rear axle and use a wire to tie on or cable tie to prevent them popping out while off road. (I know El Freddo does this as well)

Vidler has first hand experience with full power hill climbs with a welded rear diff and exactly what it can do with rear driveshafts lol :P
I think he lifted the rear end off the ground right at the top of a hill and came down hard on one wheel - snapped one of the rear driveshafts clean in two!
He was running 14's with 27" tyres at the time I think.
EJ22 power.
L series with 5spd part time gearbox. The pic might be floating around somewhere.

yeah im only powered by an old ea82 so i guess the amount of power and torque i have i should be okay, ill just have to carry and extra drive shaft when i stray to far from home.

Yeah definitely easy to keep a spare. As I recall, it was a difficult 4x4 trip the rest of the day in 3-wheel drive. it makes more of a difference than you'd expect.

I'm running the same sized tyres and the only problem I've had is the engine running out of puff(ea82) on deep loose sand or steep hills. If you can keep your speed up your ok, otherwise you'll really suffer. I don't have that problem any more since moving to ej22.

how about a ea82 with a webber and free flowing exhaust from heads back. still prob only just enough power lol , the only draw back is the not so low low range in the subys . i was thinking that i might not have enough power once both wheels have grip at the rear.

Yeah, as AP says, I've used cable ties, nails, fencing wire etc to hold the shaft in while 4wd'n and have never had a problem with shafts coming off. The cable ties showed no signs of any sheering either.

The L series power with both rears having traction will be fine - that's the idea of the welded rear end.

And +1 for taking a shaft out when on the black top - less hop-skipping/squealing noise and weird tyre wear pattern, even with only a bit of black top use, my rear tyres wore unevenly.

All the best with it - you'll love the welded rear end! Defenetly pack an extra shaft or two ;)

you made a typo. its spelt and said - EJ22 POWAH!!!!!!

i used a welded diff with 29 inch tyres for a few trips. had no worries. seemed ok on the road too- but i usually took the shaft out. only went thru one rear cv shaft with it chirping 27s for almost 3 years
