Hey there folks,

Hit a road block in my tear down of my ej22. The manaul suggests making some sort of special tool to remove the piston pins, something about bending the end back to hold the pin to pull it off... ah how are we supposed to bend the end back if the tool is inside the block??? Wondering what you guys have done yourselves?

Also, the beloved manual says to use a 'spring compressor with the appropriate adapter'... wonderful, how helpful. What do you guys use?

I built a tool myself using an old long flat blade screw driver, a washer and a socket. I bent about 5-6mm of the end of the flat blade at 90deg, welded the washer on about half way along the length of the shaft and use the old heavy socket as a slide hammer. It works very well.

Once you have removed the retainer clip you slide the screw driver in but not past the inner retainer. Lever down slightly so the bit that is bent up hooks on the inner side of the gudgeon. Then use the socket to slide along and tap the gudgeon out.

i use a adjustable f clamp, with a piece of tube with some of the side cut out to get access to valve collets. use pointy stick to dislodge. patience will be tested in replacing them, use bit of grease to help them stay

To get the guegon pins out I've always used a slide hammer - works a treat!

I'm guessing you're having the heads done over - thus the removal of the valves? Otherwise its not necessary to remove the valves from the heads...
