I know you suppose to change your timing belt every 100,000km but I was wondering how many Km could you get out of your belt before it broke?

i got around 120,000, then it broke.. in a quite inconvenient location.
So i suggest if your reaching 100,000ks, change it. It will save you a lot of headaches.

You go as long as you can, and when it breaks report back so we all know.

Yeah...I will change it at 100,000km .....I just wondering if anyone got more than your 120.000km?

don't bother exceeding bec if you break down in middle of nowhere at middle of the night, you're stuffed.
It really depends on the age, wear, heat and cold, chemical reaction (acid, oil, dust, water etc), no one here will be able to tell you.
Better be safe then sorry, change it to recommend times, ie. 100,000kms unless instructed.

That sounds like a good idea too but do you think I would get more life out of my water pump than your 1994 gen2 sti ? I always have it fully serviced and the water coolant is replaced at serviced intervals.

The post you put up are plain dumb you will find most you have placed on here by looking for it in the search section above. WTF has my gen2 sti got to do with post ? nothing !

its easy for the water pump to be changed out while all the covers ect are off the front of the motor & it would take 1 hour more in labour. The pump has a mechanical seal , carbon and ceramic these do fail over time & being the part the makes the water go around its important.

there ain't no service you can do to a water pump it will die when it is good and ready. on one car it will last 180,000, on another it will go 300,000, on my 93 l series it went at 230,000, started a mysterious water loss which was traced to a minute leak at the pump, no noises or sudden crunches . bugger of a thing to get at with the air con pump having to be moved and all the bits taken off the front, may as well do it while you are doing the belts, or at least every second belt change, assuming you do 100,000 belt changes.

I'd have a guess that it is more of a time rather than mostly a kilometre thing. I've always changed my belts at 100,000km and a couple have looked almost new because they've only been in there 2-3 years. If your's is a non-interference motor it'd be interesting to see how many km you could actually get out of it inside 4 years and see if it breaks or not. I think the weather conditions would play a part too, after all it is mainly rubber.

Yes, you're probably right SUBYDAZZ . It will be 6 years by this september that we will be replacing out timing belt at our 100,000 k service.

Water pump.... if you're in that area its really up to you if you should replace the pump, but its worth replacing the seals because you never know in a few months it could leak. Thats based on my experiences, I always replace while the timing being done at the same time. The OEM pump is $125.

I once knew of an old JB camira (shudder!) that had never had the belt replaced and had done over 300 thousand k's, and to adjust those you had to rotate the waterpump in the housing, so I was not game to tighten it because the pumps always leaked after it.
Another time an old escort came in for its first visit to us and had just ticked over 100 thousand, I told the owner to bring it back asap to get it replaced and took it for a spin around the block and snapped the belt and bent all the valves!
You just cant tell I guess..........
