Bought a second hand shaft from an importer as a spare and changed the inner boot on it today.
Comes apart and goes back together the same as the earlier ones.
Less moving parts, so probably cheaper to produce?

Yeah, not sure when the change was, but these are the type of joints Subaru are using now.
This was the first time i'd seen inside one!

They are the same as my 01 GT forester CVs.

1997 on all models moved to the 'tri-pot' style....

Yes that is a tripod joint .
Given a choice I'd prefer a DOJ to those as they are much simpler and have more than 3 point contact to share the load .

I had an EA81 shaft like this...
My brothers 81 Fiat X1/9 uses that type and I've seen it on a 88 Telstar as well.
Just a different way around it.

If you care about wheel travel you will find that the tripod joint has less potential so is a step backwards.

So ball type joints are better?

Ah,
They tout them as longer lasting, but don't mention travel as there talking standard height.
Thanks for that tip Brumbyrunner.

Better for what?
I've heard the tripod joints last forever. Ask an SVX owner.
Yep, the good ole' SVX was the pioneer. Tripod joints, 114.3mm PCD and 30mm uprights where the Macpherson strut bolts on.
All things the STI embraced 10 years later....
