G'day brenton!
I believe the two shafts are interchangable but the L series units are the best to use as they are designed for the L - the MY shafts have two CV cups that allow the shaft to lengthen/shorten, the L only has one like the front shafts... I don't know what running the MY units on the L will do to their longivity.
I'd look for the L series units - you can still drive around without the rear shafts in without any problems, just don't engage 4wd on the fly, there could be some nasty grinding sounds and it won't do anything for you anyway...
Cheers

I don't 'know' but guessing as the diffs are the same dimension and the L is wider than MY that MY rear shafts will be too short/narrow. I thought both had double off set joints DOJ's at each end of the rears.

No, "L series" rear axles look about 30mm longer then "MY" ones.
The wheel base is much wider on the "L series" then the older "MY". The "L series" is about the same width wheel base as all Hilux's, good for driving on sand as you sit in the runs instead of getting bogged down by pushing new ruts. Ok, little off topic there.

There are 2 types of L series rear shafts.
The early ones had 23 spline outside x 22 spline inside DOJs on both ends, the same as MY but, as Phizinza said, are about 30mm longer and cannot be interchanged.
Later L's changed to an outer CV and this continued through to the Liberty.

This is what I was thinking of but forgot the extra width of the L...
There's your answer Brenton!
