Just a question here -
Is there any possible if I could do this - just a thought as it might not be possible...
Can you install Dual Range components in Single Range AWD box?
Another theory (if yes above) - Can you use L series D/R components in single range AWD box with AWD transfer case?
Cheers

Yes and yes because thats virtually what I have . The difference is that mine has the early DR Lib close ratio gearset rather than the wide ratio turbo L gearset .
Ok from the top , you need DR L series front cases to house the dual range double idler gear and to supply the selector mechanism .
You also need the DR L's input shaft which is effectively the front half of the mainshaft . The single range mainshaft is one long shaft and remember 1st and second mainshaft gears are machined into the original shaft blanc .
When you remove the one piece one you lose those gears .
You would get them back if you had either the rear half of the mainshaft from a DR PT RX Turbo box or naturally an original AWD L DR shaft .
I should mention at this stage that 1st gear pair is the same ratio in close and wide gearsets but 2nd is not so will only work in the correct gear pair .
You have to have the external selector rod that runs along the top drivers side of the box and drill the hole that lets the rod in and out of the top of the extension housing like a PT DR box has . I believe the selector detent mechanism fits in as per DR L boxes .
The first time I saw the DR EJ box detent system I though it'd be easier to duplicate this in L cases and run the simpler Lib cable and selection lever .
Its all doable but a lot of fiddling .

No matter how you do it, if you want D/R you HAVE to have the D/R casing wether that be EJ or EA casing. I'm only talking about the front two halfs. The rear part has to be from what you want, as in 4WD it needs to be L, AWD it needs to be EJ.

My thoughts too - otherwise every 2 wheel drive subi box could be built into a DR 4wd box - but alas, no place for the Dual range gearing... Single range EA boxes engage the rear drive via the same external mechanism as the rare EA DR lockable AWD, this is in the casing that bolts to the rear of the gearbox - the interals of this casing are different between the single range part time box and the lockable AWD box.
EJ single range has the same rear casing and internals but lacks the low range gearing.
A bit of trivia for you there, or pointless information if you want...

Yes the EA AWD trans is different starting at the diff pinion and heading south , basically the whole lower shaft and rear casing is different .
The "transfer gears" (no not high/low range) are what takes the drive from the rear of bottom shaft to the top shaft at the rear of the gearbox .
In the EA AWD one the lower "transfer gear" is on the side of the center diffs hemisphere so that you get the front/rear "differentiation" before the drive is transfered to the upper rear or output shaft .
To look at the rear gearbox case is deeper and extends further back to house the rear lower shaft bearing and center diff .
Just to quantify for those reading these gearbox threds .
My box is a real bitzer box that started as Vortex SR AWD , got L DR cases and LR gears , Lib close ratio main gears .
