RX distributors

while putting my new engine in, found my disi to be rather dirty, and the vacuum advance/retard thingie was broken. it didnt move when i sucked or blowed through the vacuum hose, and when i took it off and blew through the hose, air just came out the otherside, so obviously the diaphram inside it is stuffed - certainly not good for a turbo engine. anyway, i figured i might as well just try and get a completely new disi so make sure it'll be fine for quite some time.

anyway, can you buy new or reco'd disi's? if so where from, how much? repco etc?

I found this out the hard way. Converted to LPG and only took 5 months to discover that gas vapour was, under boost, zipping through this diaphragm and igniting inside the cap turning it into a small combustion chamber and then a bloody backfire.

I bought a new one from Subaru that took about 8 days from Japan

This is the vacuum advance and boost retard unit on the three plug ECU RX L series


Subaru part number is 22301 AA110

steam the label off to reveal Hitachi part numbers 70139684 and 44R83 - 44003

made a good healthy difference even at the eat 20 cent packs of noodles for a month price of about A$270

Like most things 3P EA82T I have a spare dizzy and its diaphragm is RS .
Thats not such a bad price for a complete distributor and everything would be fresh .

The one in my engine is much better but not perfect , holds gob pressure but not vacuum .

After the engine goes in if it has timing curve problems I may see if I can locate an old Haltech IG4 programmable timing only computer and wire it into a later 4P CAS type distributor .
The mechanical 3P dizzy can be made to give good results down low or up high but not both at the same time .
Full management like the 4P system gets around the mechanical dizzy limitations .

yeah $270 is ok, but still a bit nasty. at least it's completely new and should be fine for many many years to come

Gee I don't think so , I think it's amazing that you can still buy a distributor that was last in a production car in early mid 1987 .
Possibly to make things cheaper the diaphragm can assembly may have been sourced as a seperate part - if they are still available .

Mechanical/pressure referenced turbo distributors are a special case because often they are designed to advance at varying sub atmospheric manifold pressure and retard with rising positive pressure .

I've been playing with different pressure sources for my 3P dizzy and its impossible to achieve what can be done with an electronically controlled system . Sometimes engines like their ignition to ramp up to a point and even go backwards a touch before increasing further up the rev range . You can't do this with a mech system .

A brand new dizzy will get closer than a worn one so its about as good as it gets in this case .

If I could get a new diaphragm it'd be good .

HEY !! Who said anything about that price beng for a new dizzy ?? That was for the diaphragm assembly !! Both my other spares were also stuffed or could only hold five psi then stuffed !!

Advanced Diaphragm Options - They will rebuild the diaphragm for you. The one on the RX is a bi-directional diaphragm. It will cost you about $88

I wish I'd asked before and got this answer. I just chucked one dismantled one out. I think I have another somewhere to send away one day . Ive made a note somewhere in my notebook

the guy is working on it now, but since mine was stuffed i really need a picture of the distributor with the cap off so we can see the no vacuum/no boost position of the advance/retard thingie's arm. just like the attached picture, but with the vacuum thingie in place and connected

so just what was done to rebuild the vacuum can that photos were needed?

Got a photo of finished product?
