Where did that come from?

I was changing the oil filter on my EA82, when a ball bearing, about 8mm dia fell onto the ground next to me. It's nice and shiny, and was covered in oil, so I suppose it's important? Where did it come from? How do I put it back?

sounds like the oil pressure relief valve has come out, but me not sure how that can happen.
if it is that then yes you should put it back in before you drive it.not sure how to put it back, as never had the oil pump apart.

yeh sounds like the oil lock valve....it failed on my rex (which did a big end the day after) due to oil circulation going all upto shit

Same happened to me... time for a new oil pump. I drove mine probably 2000 miles with no ill affect. Upside is the pump is externally mounted, not a big thing to change.

Ok, checked out the pump, and the pressed steel seat for the ball was ruined.
So I pulled the seat out (it was in two bits), walked over to the lathe and turned up a new one in stainless. Popped the spring back in the hole, put the ball into the new seat with some grease to hold it. Tapped the new seat into place and used a small centrepop to make sure it stays put.
Guess what? The car now runs better, dosen't tick, isn't getting all hot and bothered anymore and I think I might get another 10,000 out of the donk before it explodes.....touch wood.
