a fix for engine stay rod bracket breaking away

Post by OKsubaru » Sat Nov 08, 2008 8:54 am

my old neighbour popped in again yesterday with his 84 wagon to tell me new brake pads marketed by a German spark plug maker tossed into his front made the world of difference to his brakes including handbrake.

His new problem he felt comfortable sharing with me and now however many in here, is the factory firewall bracket below the spare wheel carrier under the bonnet. It had previousy been welded back to the firewall at the lower side but has now broken away at the top side. To get access for his welding friend he is planning to jigsaw away at the spare wheel carrier bracket to weld back on later.

Has anyone had this same problem? And did you have a similar or better fix for the dilemma without gearbox removal?

The noise as a result of the break is horrid on backing off and some gear shifting, but he remembered it from his previous break on the lower side. I had no idea what the noise was myself

it shouldnt break on a standard car.

has it been body lifted at all? engine moved

Mounts still ok (engine and Gearbox)

there really shuldnt be anything to pull it away enough to break it if it was a stock situation?
