1997 4.11 4EAT. VTD rear end. 4.44 diffs. early outback speedo gears. early WRX TCU
Pros: great offroad. lockable center. ability to ease power on to gently climb obstacles. no need to dump the clutch like a manual. outback speedo gears means my speedo is correct. 4.44 ratios on a 4.11 box put gearing back to stock with big tyres. huge improvement in fuel efficiency and driveability. VTD rear end means lots of rear wheel drive which is great for climbing hills.
cons: expensive to set up. have spent about 3k on this box (parts + full rebuild) however it now appears to be bullet proof. autos chew fuel around town. better on the highway though once the converter is locked up. averaged under 10L/100kms on the trip out west this year.
manual box - dont do it posty

Standard 1993 Liberty dual range no mods at all 3.9ratio
pro's: cheap to replace not to bad offroad, ej20t has the power to compensate for tall low range!!
con's: not really low enough for hill climb crawling......
