Seals for Clutch LSD Diff

I recently procured an LSD for my second L Series. The thing was covered in oil and dirt. Are they susceptible to leaking? Should I replace certain seals before just plopping it in?

The thing that will make those R series diffs leak a bit (assuming the seals ARE ok) is if the little breather gets blocked .

From memory all long nose R160/180/200 diffs use a solid as opposed to a collapsable pinion bearing spacer so it should be possible to remove the companion flage and renew the pinion seal .
Have looked in my genuine 87 WSM and yes the pinion spacer is solid/ tubular .

The side seals can be got at by removing the splined stubs and levering them out/drifting new ones in with something of just a slightly smaller diameter ie socket .

If you are not sure take it to a diff specialist with a photocopy of the exploded diff diagram .

Are you in Sydney ?

A .

Any Datsun Rally specialist could do it for you easily enough .

Datsun rally specialist? pretty sure the work experience kid at just about any mechanics workshop could replace oil seals on a R160 diff :) It's likely to just be the side seals.

Adrian - I would not be suprised if the breather was blocked. It was caked in oil and dirt. The seals on the side don't seem hardened (thats not to say there isn't a problem)

I am in Brisbane. Not sure about giving it to a Datsun specialist - those guys may flog it :p

Yeah, you got yourself a good one by the sounds of it Fang! I'm about to weld a diff while I "wait" for an LSD to magically appear...

Cheers

Those side seals can be changed in about 15 mins if the diff is out of the car. I think my seals only cost $3 each so you're crazy not to do it.

Hey Bennie - yeah I think I paid a bit too much for it but they are getting rarer than hen's teeth so I grabbed it while I could. It was from a wrecker as well - and they knew it was worth (unfortunately). Your locked diff will keep you honest though ;)

Yeah agreed on that - certainly sounds worth doing.

Although I'm new to Sub-wheeling, I always mounted my diff and alxe breathers on my land cruisers and toyotas remotely via hose to keep them clear of water, mud etc.

Yup I have that done on my other L Series - and will be doing the same on this one too.
