DIY Rear Diff Servicing for Forester.....???
DIY Rear Diff Servicing for Forester.....???
Anyone done any DIY rear diff servicing on a Forester or their Suby in general???
After a little swim a month back and a today a 100km of tar and a few hours of techy driving I've developed a bit of a rear diff whine.... well a whine from that end and I'm gonna stay optimiscit and follow that up first...
I'm hoping it just got a gut full of water and any lube has been broke down I I can top it up or pack it full of grease or whatever...
Any tips...???

on the back of the diff there should be two plugs. A normal 1/2inch square socket should fit them to remove them. Undo the bottom plug and drain the oil(could be very very tight) try and get as much out as you can.
Then undo the top plug and re-top the oil. Make sure you get the correct oil depending on whether youve got a lsd or whatever. I know the penrite bottles have a tube attached to the bottle so it makes it very easy to re-fill the diff. The diff is full when the oil starts coming out the top plug where you are filling it.(this will be obvious when you look at it)
Should take about 900ml, to about a litre.
cheers

also jack the front of the car up when draining and let down when filling. It will help get all the oil/water out. I am pretty sure it is Penrite Limslip to, just make sure it is okay to use in an LSD (Limited Slip Differential).

I got some 80W and did the job. It didn't say whether it was for LSD or not... I was just keen to see if there was anything in there and what state it was in and it was all the servo had...Is it really gonna make that much difference if its non-LSD specific ??? If so I'll get the correct fluid tomoz and sort it anyway.
The diff was full but what came out was really milky... I let it drain pretty well.
Either way.... it had no effect on the rumble/whine.... probably more of a rumble....
I'm thinking maybe a wheel bearing or two....??? How hard is that job...??? I've got manuals in PDF...
Hopefully not anything CV related

Yes the oil is pretty specific as i believe it has special additives in it, i would change it to the proper one some time soon, it may damage it later down the track.
