Brumby issues

Hi all,

My 84 Brumby EA81 keeps filling up the PCV hoses with crap - which in turn gets into the carby and screws that up. Looks like I'm going to need to get the carby redone (again).

I am guessing it has a crook valve somewhere - does that sound about right? It used to run like crap (backfire on deceleration) until I put some engine cleaner though it - now its considerably better.

Is it worth putting one of those Weber carbys on it that are always advertised on eBAY?

Also how easy are the heads to recondition and can a 5 speed gearbox be fitted to a brumby?

If it is getting in to your carby it is more than just a valve that needs replacing. Sounds like the oil rings might be worn. Your PC valve might be full of crap and need cleaning but it won't stop the oil usage.

The webber conversion is a good one. It won't fix your problem though.

The heads are quite simple to work on.

Yes you can fit a 5 speed to a Brumby. If you have a look at the tech manual, or do a search in these mechanical sections you should find quite a lot of info about it.

get a catch can from someone like Supercheep (sexy anodised alloy for $60)or make yer own. Good to look at to get yer idea straight
The idea is to divert the air from the rocker covers to a container so any oil drops out and collects in the bottom and the air continues to flow to the air filter. There is a certain path required , filtered air flows acroos the crankcase from rocker cover to rocker cover then back to air filter to burn any fumes

Interesting. Thanks for the insightful replies. I'm not much of a mechanic - but I like to have a go and the old Subaru's seem pretty good to work on.

Have never attempted a motor rebuild - but one thing I was wondering is can I upgrade some of the components in the motor so that they cope better with modern unleaded fuel - since it was designed for leaded? Alternatively can I put an OHC model EA81 in it? From what I understand they are more economical and yield better performance.

Yeah it uses oil - interesting idea about the catch can - but that is more of a workaround then a fix right?

Thanks for all your help.

EDIT: Bloody hell.... just been reading the wiki link. I think I am way out of my league here. Here I was thinking that changing the gearbox would be as simple as taking the old one out and putting a 5 speed in. Lots of good information there though. I am just worried that anything I may attempt could turn out to be costly (or dangerous!).

Also does anyone know where I can get a roof support and the windscreen pillars for a Brumby? If I can't find them then I wont be able to do anything else with it (had a nasty incident involving a tree falling across the road in front of me). We've been calling wreckers everywhere and can't find them. Worst case scenario is that we can straighten the old ones but I have been advised that it could be very difficult to get the windscreen to fit correctly!

Or for the price of the holley conversion on ebay + a bit more $$ you could have an EJ under the bonnet...

not being much of a mechanic is sort of how we all start, well some of us anyway. Others mothers may have complained about baby dragging its tool box through the birth canal, born mechanic !

Try SAW (stawell auto wreckers) for your roof they were reasnably cheap and have plenty of brumbies last time I was there even what's left of a targa top.

Thanks Tex - will give em a go!

Can anyone tell me where I can get a rear fuel filter from? No one seems to know what model they are (got the front one changed no worries). Also no one can seem to get me stabiliser bar D bushes - the ones that attach the bar to the control arm. One company told me that there was only one type - took their word for it and they were the wrong size. Went to another mob and just got stuffed around.

Thanks.

I have it written somewhere... not in the manual notes... of course, I've textad it under the bonnet along with ball joint numbers BJ257, RBJ257 (repco#)

Front Z428 Rear Z366 Recall it is only Brumby that uses the rear filter as well as front

Measure the sway bar diameter, someone in here sells urethane bushes, sure they will KNOW !

POST A NEW " WANTED BRUMBY SWAY BAR BUSH" post for results in case they have no time to read Brumby issue tirtled postn

Thanks steptoe!

Guys your wiki page is absolutely TOPS! - may I suggest a link to it in the bar at the top of each page ;)

So glad I found this forum, the more I read about the Brumby utes the more convinced I am to throw time / effort and of course money into really fixing mine up. Thankyou all for your help and advice so far - rest assured there will be plenty more questions ;)

If you're after just the windscreen pillar any MY wagon or sedan will be the same. If its the rear pillar behind the door that you need then keep looking for a brumby I'm sorry to say.
