early falcon auto gearbox - questions

My elderly next door neighbours just blew their gearbox. It's a '91 EJ falcon with an auto gearbox.

The local wreckers has a '91 EB falcon that looks like it's in good nick, does anyone know if the gearbox is compatible?

How big a job is it to swap the gearboxes on them, I bet nowhere near as easy as a subaru. Trying to work out if I can help them out or if I should send them off to a mechanic. Any idea on roughly how much a mechanic should charge to swap a gearbox ?

hey stinky first of all i think you mean ea not ej falcon and second you will have to find out if the blown gearbox is a 3 speed or a 4 speed auto,if its a 3 speed i thinks its the same size and will fit but i think the computer has controls the auto but if its a 4 speed it will have the mpfi motor and should be the same as the eb so all should be fine, its not that big of a job same as a subaru but no driveshafts to the front wheels so probaly easier
hope this helps
cheers steve

All EB's were 4 speed they changed to 4 speed during EA model I think,do you mean EL not EJ.

EA series 1 were 3 speed. EA series 2 were 4 speed. Cosmetic difference between the 2 models is the series 1 had horizontal vents at the bottom of the c-pillar and the series 2 did not. The 3 speed BW is a real clunker (it dates back decades and is notoriously weak), and I'm sure you could google info on fitting the later 4 speed to a series 1 EA.
